The Black Mat is the only one that works! ~ By Rose I've been practicing ashtanga/power yoga for about a year and a half now. I'm not an expert, but I know what works for me. My hands and feet sweat a lot during class. Most mats I've tried turn into a slip-and-slide after the first 5 minutes. From day one I've had to use a towel under my hands at the front of the mat to keep from collapsing in down dog. I've tried them all. The Black Mat is the only one that works. It grips perfectly and I don't even need the towel under my hands. I also love that it is so thick and dense. It doesn't "follow" me when I jump through, provides plenty of padding for my knees/arms, and is very stable for balancing poses. I even like that it's heavy...it helps tone my arms! |
Finally! ~ By Debbie I debated about this mat for some time. I'm an avid practitioner, and in five years of religious practice, the Manduka mat was my fourth mat purchased. I started with a Prana mat that went bald around the hands and feet positions for down dog. Then, i went to the lululemon mat, which was great at first, but then just lost its traction and became very slippery, even with the yogitoes. My next mat was the Jade Harmony mat, which was my favorite, until the potent natural rubber smell just became distracting, and it too started shedding little rubber pieces and got threadbare in spots. With the Manduka, there was an immediate difference. It never bunches up and gets stickier with use. Why wouldn't you want a mat that is guaranteed for two lifetimes? You can put it in your will. |
with Yogoco bag the weight is not an issue anymore ~ By Brodi I've been doing yoga for 7 years. I've gone through a couple of sticky mats, so I decided to buy something more durable. I love the texture of this mat -- it's very solid feeling with a good bit of stick -- and it doesn't move around at all. It has just the right amount of cushion to it, and I use it on a hard floor. I didn't have any trouble with the coating on the mat -- it wore off after a little bit, and I used the towel until it did. Also now that there is a Yoga bag by Yogoco that can fit the big manduka mat - the weight is not an issue anymore. if you get a manduka mat, I recommend to get a Yogoco bag, they have a few great styles, I got the 'All Black', It just goes over my shoulders! |
The best investment I have made ~ By Lanette I have been practicing yoga for nearly 3 years. I feel that the Black Mat is the best investment I have made. Its comfortable for all the floor work, and stable for all the standing and inversions asansa. Its heavy, but no no one is perfect. |
Thick mat for years of practice ~ By Jim This mat provides the best slip-resistance with a durable, thick mat for years of practice. If you can't get rid of the film, spray it with Simple Green and let it bake in the sun. Once you try this mat, you will never want to practice on a cheap yoga mat again. |
Great mat for a great practice ~ By Sean The manduka mat pro makes your yoga practice a whole new level, no more slipping on down dog, I use a Yogitoes towel on top and it is much better then mats I've tried before. I also got the Yogoco bag which can fit the big manduka mat, so it is easier to get to class. |
I love the block just as much ~ By Jamie After buying the Manduka Yoga mat, which I am still hesitant to take out of the house to the yoga studio, lest I get dirt or scratches on it (yes I know, overkill for home practice), I love the block just as much. I use it to get into Pincha Mayurasana and it is sturdy, the texture feels soft against my fingers, the frog mark is cute and the color is wonderful. There is a certain energy or feel about the block, and I know this sounds very strange, but I am drawn to my mat more to practice yoga with it. I love this far above the small, foamy material cheap standard yoga blocks and it is well worth the extra bucks. Quality matters! |
Thick mat for years of practice ~ By Larry I have tight hamstrings. Down-dog is very hard for me, and my version of the asana is rather wide, creating thrust at hands and feet. I bought this mat hoping to get better grip, especially when sweating, than is possible on lighter mats. The extra weight is acceptable, and even the ridiculously high price I can handle in exchange for durability and a truly non-slip surface. Oh well. As delivered, the surface is actually the slickest of any of my four yoga mats. I have used the mat twice, and then went looking for the packaging to return it. But one of my teachers suggested that I scrub it with a stiff brush, hot water, and a little dishwashing detergent. This really helped, and now I really like this mat. I wonder why it doesn't come iwth instructions for this necessary prep-work? Or, better yet, why not ship it ready to use? After all, for $80, one expects a rectangle of rubber that is virtually perfect. Anyway, the prep-work isn't too onerous, just annoying |
A Must for the Hard-Core Yoga Student ~ By Stacy This mat provides the best slip-resistance with a durable, thick mat for years of practice. If you can't get rid of the film, spray it with Simple Green and let it bake in the sun. Once you try this mat, you will never want to practice on a cheap yoga mat again. |
Finally! ~ By Brian At first I was blown away by the price. $70 for a yoga mat is a lot but if you practice yoga on a regular basis (more than twice a week) you will definately go through several cheaper yoga mats and wind up spending more. I really do love this mat! It is the best I have ever used. |
Yogalicious! ~ By It was expensive than other mats but I think I made the wise choice to buy this one. It is long enough and thick enough. Very durable. |
Amazing mat ~ By Davi Thie Manduka mat is awesome. It's very thick, comfortable and is extremely secure. Does not slip or slide a bit. The only negative aspect is the weight. It's a bit heavy to carry around, but I can live with that. |
I like it! ~ By Brodeur I have had this mat for about 2 years now and it still is like new... In the past, I used to go through a standard mat every 3 months, but this one is different in the sense that the foam is much denser, making the mat incredibly scratch resistant. There are other advantage to this for Yoga practice and especially standing poses and balances, this mat is firm and provides very stable support, which is a welcome change from regular mats which can get mushy. To me, it's the perfect balance between firmness and support. At 71" long, it is slightly longer than your average mat, great for taller people, who tend to spill over on smallers mats. The downsides? Weight and bulkiness: it's a pain in the butt to shlepp around as it very heavy and I also had to get a special bag (available from Manduka) for it as well, as my standard issue bag was too small for it... But it's worth it! |
Absolutly the best ~ By G Kami Absolutly the best. Finally I have found the mat that feels right for my yoga. To break it before I used it, I washed it with a semi hard brush and a solution of hot water and white vinegar, rinsed it with hot water, and then let it dry under the sun. This way I had no problem with it being slippery. I am enjoying it everyday for the new dimension it is bringing to my yoga practice, and the feeling that I have made a wise purchase. |
MY FABULOUS MANDUKA YOGA MAT WORTH THE EXTRA $$$$ ~ By Agaja I have been using 2 thinner mats for about 3 years and finally spent the money for a really good mat. I am very happy with this mat. It is thick enough to use alone. It is slippery at first because of a film they put on it. But in a few weeks of use, it works wonderfully. I have no compaints. |
this mat is the best! ~ By Aadi I've been doing aggressive vinyasa flow level 2-3 yoga classes for three years now, and have gone through quite a few mats that start deteriorating quickly, slip when sweaty, and have little knee padding for some strenuous poses. I've been using the black 71" Manduka mat for about 3 months now, and although I still slip a little bit when sweaty, the dense padding is worth the extra carrying around weight of this mat, as is the extra wide width. It truly is top quality, and I think it'll hold up for many years to come. I did have to purchase a new carrying bag to accommodate the longer length. So far it's the best mat I've owned. Impressive. |
Awesome Mat ~ By Alberto I have been practicing power yoga 4-5 times per week for over a year. After mats repeatedly wore out on me, my instructor recommended the Manduka mat. She has been using hers for over 2 years and it still looks like new. It took a few weeks for the coating (makes it a little slippery at first) and the scent to dissipate, but after the initial break-in period, this mat has stood up to lots of wear. I love it so much that I bought one for my husband and one for my mom. The Manduka mat provides great traction. I am able to hold balance poses easily on my mat (something I have found to be more difficult on softer mats). It is amazingly durable (no nicks or scratches after a few months of use). As for the size...I love it. I am 5'9" and I like a deep Warrior pose - with this mat, I don't have to worry about going over the edge. My 6' husband agrees. Caution - this mat is a little larger and heavier than most found at the gym or sporting-goods store, so if looking for a mat bag, test out the size and strength of the bag with the mat before purchasing one. |
Amazing mat ~ By Stuart When I started doing power yoga, I didn't understand the importance of using a good mat. After a couple of weeks on a slippery, substandard mat, I went and picked up the Manduka 71" black mat. Even though I placed it on carpet, it provides a very stable foundation for poses and provides just the right amount of cushioning. The surface of the mat is sticky, but not so sticky that it comes up with your hands when you transition to another pose. If you are 6'0" tall or over, the 71" mat may be a bit too short. Go ahead and get the 85" mat and your toes won't ever be off the mat during an upward dog pose. |
