Women's Pedometers

Women's Pedometers Make for Better Health

A pedometer is a device that counts the steps a person takes by monitoring the motion of the person's hips. Variations of pedometers have been used even before Leonardo Da Vinci played with the idea of using it within military operations. Today, women's pedometers are used to measure the steps and distance while walking for health purposes. Research shows that 10,000 steps per day is the ideal balance between caloric expenditure via movement and caloric intake, creating a fit body. Getting healthy can be easy by using a pedometer to make every day actions count towards good health.

In a 2004 study conducted by Dr. Catrine Tudor-Locke and published in the "Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise," the real results of how many steps per day the average American took were disappointing, health wise. Men in the survey took an average of 7,192 steps and women took an average of 5,210 steps per day, nearly 5,000 steps short of the 10,000 steps per day based upon a Japanese promotion in the mid 1980s. Dr. Tudor-Locke's research, however, says you can consider 5,000 steps as "low active", 7,500 steps as "somewhat active" and 10,000 steps as "active". If you take more than 12,500 steps per day, you are "highly active". What it appears to come down to is that as long as you are taking at least 5,000 steps per day, you can classify yourself at least a little active. Incidentally, 10,000 steps is roughly equivalent to 5 miles.

Finding the motivation to put the pedometer on and get moving can be challenging, however, tools like Gaiam's Pedometer Fitness Kit are designed to keep you going. The women's pedometer kit comes with a 60 minute audio CD with fitness coach Debbie Rocker, providing you with a workout and energizing music. Watch your aerobic capacity strengthen as you make your way from the beginner kit through intermediate to advanced levels. Not only will you get the steps in per day, but you'll also get a calorie-burning workout that helps melt fat and build muscle.

A good women's pedometer will have several features in addition to being a step counter. To get the best health results from this little guy, pick one that also has a calorie counter to track what you've burned. Of course a clock is necessary, as is a clip so it can fasten to your clothing. Bonus features would be backlights or flashlights so you can read your results in the early morning or late evening workouts. Panic alarms, that we hope you'll never have to use, are also strong additions to your feature list.

You'll definitely need one more thing to help make that women's pedometer a tool towards better health, and that's a goal. According to the Harvard Health Letter, in addition to your pedometer, you need a goal. Maybe that goal is simply aiming for that 10,000 step mark. Maybe it's getting slightly past it or slightly under that marker. The combination of keeping track of your exercise and having a goal to work towards is the magic mix to fitness. Be sure you're keeping a good, brisk pace to keep your heart rate up on those walks and feel free to pump those arms. You'll burn extra calories and tone your upper half with some carefully coordinated arm swings.

So grab a goal and a women's pedometer and get moving! Before you know it, you'll feel better, look better and have more energy. Can't find a pedometer you like? Check out ActivewearUSA.com for walking gear, pedometers and more accessories to make your walk a motivating one!
